Mark your calendars now for our "Choral Spectacular"

Our special winter concert on February 26 is a collaboration with the Orchestra of Indian Hill and the Nashoba Valley Chorale. If you get the flyers from Indian Hill Music, you'll see our February concert, "Choral Spectacular" listed as part of their regular season. Quoting from their flyer: "Stravinsky's passionate Symphony of Psalms and Haydn's expressive Harmony Mass entice with the combined forces of Harvard Pro Musica and Nashoba Valley Chorale."

A Full House and Much Merriment at our December Concert

Our Holiday Concert on December 3, performed to a full house at the UU church in Harvard, was a great success. The program included holiday carols and selections from Handel's Messiah. Recordings are available. Email us for information.

About Harvard Pro Musica

Harvard Pro Musica is a classical, community-based choral ensemble with a long history in the Greater Boston area. Founded in 1969 by 18 enthusiastic singers, it has been in continuous existence since then and currently consists of about 60 members from Harvard, Acton, Ayer, Bolton, Boxboro, Concord, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Shirley and other surrounding towns. Harvard Pro Musica has two full concerts a year, and some small group performances, such as the concert of Shaker pieces performed last September as a fund-raiser for the Harvard Historical Society. In recent years Harvard Pro Musica has performed in collaboration with other local choral groups such as The Treble Chorus of New England, Sounds of Stow, and Nashoba Valley Chorale.

Our musical director, Mark Bennett, DMA, is an experienced university and community chorus conductor, educator, choral-vocal clinician, adjudicator and professional choral performer. Our accompanist is Susan Minor, is a highly-sought after accompanist, playing for a number of area groups. Susan teaches piano at her studio in Acton and Mark offers voice lessons by arrangement.

Repertoire & Performances

Our repertoire consists of great works of the choral canon from medieval and Renaissance works, such as Wilbye and Victoria, to works by Baroque masters such as Monteverdi, Schutz, Bach and Handel, classical works of Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart, to contemporary works by Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein, Carl Orff, John Corigliano and Eric Whitacre. Opportunities exist for choral members to participate in smaller chamber groups, and often soloists are drawn from the chorus. These placements are made by informal auditions during the rehearsal cycle.

How to Join

Now in its 42nd season, Harvard Pro Musica is actively looking for new members in all voice parts for the Spring performance. No audition required, just a desire to sing. We hold open rehearsals every tuesday evening from 7:30 - 9:45 at the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church (on the town common in Harvard, MA, near the intersection of Rts. 111 and 110). New singers are always welcome (though late season joiners will have to demonstrate some familiarity with the current music selection). Members pay annual or semi-annual dues, and purchase their own sheet music.

Harvard Pro Musica is very much dependent on the generous contributions of our audience and benefactors who love music and wish to support the arts. Ticket sales and cultural grants only cover a portion of our operating expenses and your tax deductible contributions help make possible an over forty-year tradition of building community through song.
